In 1978,\u00a0Haruki Murakami<\/span>\u00a0was twenty-nine and running a jazz bar in downtown Tokyo. One April day, the impulse to write a novel came to him suddenly while watching a baseball game. That first novel,\u00a0Hear the Wind Sing<\/span>, won a new writers’ award and was published the following year. More followed, including\u00a0A Wild Sheep Chase<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0Hard-Boiled Wonderland<\/span>\u00a0and the\u00a0End of the World<\/span>, but it was\u00a0Norwegian Wood<\/span>, published in 1987, that turned Murakami from a writer into a phenomenon.<\/p>\n
